7 Hair Mistakes To Avoid

You hair is a valuable part of your appearance, so you better treat it right.  Are you making any of these common mistakes?  We jokingly call them the “cardinal rules” of hair care, but you might want to brush up on these to stay in your hair’s good graces. You’ll want to correct any missteps right away or your hair will suffer the consequences.

Boxed hair color when used at home over and over again can do some real damage to your hair. The reason being is that it’s pretty much going to turn your hair into a dry, uneven mess. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to color, that’s why professional colorists have years of training to make sure they are doing your color correctly and specifically for your head of hair.

Mistake #2: Repetitive Hair Ties

Tying your hair back into that easy to wear ponytail is going to ensure breakage in the same place everyday. That’s why you want to vary where you tie your hair back. Switch it up with some non-metal hair ties, scarves, headbands, or even bobby-pins can do less damage to your hair.

If you are skipping this step in the shower on occasion, it’s time to re-commit to your conditioner. Think about adding a weekly deep conditioning mask as well so that your hair will be smoother, softer, and more manageable.  Well moisturized hair is less susceptible to breakage.

Mistake #4: Too Much Product

A build up of product on your hair can make it much harder to style. Plus, it’s going to look lifeless and dull. Try a clarifying shampoo to rid yourself of some of the build up. This is especially true if you are a fan of dry shampoo to prolong your style. That can clog hair follicles at the root if you don’t remove it correctly.

Mistake #5: The Wrong Product

Using the wrong product for you hair type is also a mistake. You won’t be getting the style mileage you need if you don’t select your products carefully. For example, if you have fine hair using a heavy gel or hair oil can weigh your hair down. Switch it up to a lighter spray gel, or even one of the newer whipped styling mousses to give your hair some much needed volume.

Mistake #6: Hot Tools On Wet Hair

This is a great way to fry your hair. Make sure before you flat iron or use your curling rod that your hair is completely dry. Not damp. Dry. It’s much better for your hair. Plus, you want to make sure you use a heat protectant spray to coat your strands, so they are going to have a little protection from the high temperatures.

You have to be extra gentle with wet hair. You want to comb through when wet with a wide tooth comb starting from the ends working your way up to the root. Don’t use a brush, it’s too harsh on the hair and can cause breakage.
