Graceful Grey: How I Help Women Transition Without the Damage

"I'm barely in my 40's and coloring my grey every 3 weeks!"

Thinking about embracing your natural grey? You’re not alone. More and more women are ditching the dye and stepping into the salt-and-pepper era with confidence—and yes, even in their 40s!

If you’re ready to grow out your grey but not sure where to start, I’ve got you. I love helping women transition from constant coloring to embracing their natural salt and pepper! Transitioning doesn’t have to mean bleaching your hair into oblivion or dealing with that stubborn yellow undertone that never seems to go away. In fact, I’ve developed a gentler, healthier approach that combines strategic color work with gorgeous hair extensions—no heavy processing required.

The Safer, Softer Way to Go Silver!

Let’s walk through the journey with one of my fabulous clients who recently decided to stop coloring and start embracing her natural silver. She was coming in every 3-4 weeks to cover her greys. I usually tell clients once you’re coming in that often for touch ups, it might be time to transition your hair color.

Phase 1: Introduce Some Grey

Our first step? Adding a touch of silver. For this client, I used Great Lengths keratin bond extensions in silver and platinum tones. I blended them into her natural ashy brunette like soft highlights, which helped break up her visible grow-out (she had about 4–6 inches of natural roots already). This phase is all about easing the eye into the transition—without a drastic chop or harsh color. Now that's she's got some silver in her hair, we can space out her next appointments every 5-7 weeks, and ultimately get to a schedule of every 8 weeks.

Phase 2: Highlights

On her next visit, we’ll freshen things up with teasylights—delicate, subtle highlights that mimic her natural greying pattern. This helps soften the contrast between the colored hair and the new growth, making the whole look more cohesive.

Phase 3: Build on the Grey

On her third visit, we’ll add in more silver extensions, continuing to follow the direction and tone of her natural grey. As her hair grows, we’ll keep repeating this process—strategically placing teasylights and extensions to gradually increase the silver and decrease the old color. By this point, less maintenance will be required and we'll see her about every 8 weeks to keep an eye on her extensions and touch up her color.

The Secret to a Smooth Transition

This method keeps your hair healthy, strong, and full of body (thanks, extensions!). And best of all, it doesn’t involve aggressive bleaching or constant upkeep. The key is patience and starting with a solid amount of natural regrowth.

Pro tip: If you’re considering transitioning to grey, do not color your hair before your consultation. I need at least 4 inches of your natural root to properly assess your pattern and create your custom plan.
